In the age of the internet, your knowledge is bound only by your research capabilities, and your persistence. There are mountains of information available, and the articles below are by no means comprehensive, but they are a good place to start.
Our ‘official’ matches are sanctioned by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The matches follow specific guidelines set forth in the CMP Rule Books, which can be found here:
Aside from acting as a sanctioning body for a variety of shooting competitions, the CMP sells US surplus firearms to US citizens, namely, M1 Garands and Government issue 1911s, but other firearms show up as well. However, you must be eligible for purchase, which not only means you must be able to pass a background check and fill out a 4473 Form, but you also have to have a CMP issued competitor number. The good news is, all you need to to do receive a number is to compete in a CMP sanctioned match. That’s right: you don’t even have to win it. Just show up and complete the course of fire in a safe manner, and you’re in! Once your score card is returned to the CMP (by the match director), you will automatically be issued a number. Your match director can also provide a handsome certificate of achievement as well.
We hold a CMP Sanctioned ‘GSVM’ (Garand, Springfield, Vintage, Modern Military) match in December of every year. It is our hope that the majority of the competitors shoot M1 Garands… because: AMERICA! If you are interested in learning about the John C. Garand Matches, the American Rifleman published an excellent video explaining the history of the matches:

Our Bullseye Pistol Matches are a little less formal, but this article provides a nice illustration of how a sanctioned outdoor match is conducted:
